Ruth's reality

Ruth's sisters' marriages are planned for the following spring. When she overhears a conversation about her own future between her sister, Agatha, and her sickly father, she is devastated. They want her to accept a marriage to local fisherman, Jacob Whittle. This she will not do, not even for her beloved family.
