About This Book

Jean Guépin, son of Jacob Guépin (French) and Mary Attwel (English), first wrote this satirical work on Petrus Dathenus' metric psalms in Latin in 1752 as "Petri Datheni CL psalmi, ad fidem veterum membranarum curis Philomusi sedulo castigati." This work was copied and distributed by his friends and in 1758 appeared as: Datheniana, of, Ophelderingen en aanmerkingen over de vermaarde psalmberijminge van Petrus Dathenus, under the pseudonym Juvenalis Glaucomastix. The work was strongly criticized and Guépin answered in 1759, again as Juvenalis Glaucomastix, with "Lofdicht of P. Dathenus, of, Datheniaansche bedenkingen over de Maendelyksche bydragen ..." A new and improved Dutch metric translation of the Psalms finally appeared in 1773 (Het boek der Psalmen).. Cf. Biographisch anthologisch en critisch woordenboek der Nederduitsche dichters.
