About This Book

First collected ed. of the works of George Forster who had sailed as a naturalist on Cook's second voyage (1772-1775). It includes a biography and critical appreciation of Forster by G.G. Gervinus. The first two vols. comprise Forster's account of Cook's second voyage. Printed here is his final revision of the text, published in German in 1784, including material not found in the 1777 English original and superior to the earlier German ed. of 1778-1780. Forster became involved in radical politics and published here are his political writings concerning the French Revolution and the republican movement in Mainz, a city which he represented in Paris at the 1793 National Convention.
