The Surry Light Artillery was organized in 1861 as Company I (1st) of the 3rd Regiment of the Virginia Infantry Company. It was also known as Captain Thomas W. Martin's Battery was organized in 1862 as Company B of the 12th Battalion of the Virginia Light Artillery. In 1863 this company was temporarily assigned to the 20th Battalion of the Virginia Heavy Artillery. In 1865 it became Captain S. Taylor Martin's Battery of the Virginia Artillery and served as Company B of Sturdivant's Battalion of the Reserve Artillery, which may be the same as the 12th Battalion.

Wright's Battery was organized in 1862 as the Halifax Artillery. It later served as Company C for De Gournay's Battalion (also known as the 12th Battalion Louisiana Heavy Artillery). Coffin's Battery was organized in 1862 and was also known as Bethel Artillery. It served as Company D in Ed Gournay's Battalion of Heavy Artillery (also known as 12th Battalion Louisiana Heavy Artillery). This company went with the battalion to Mississippi. It was also known as Captain W. Norris Coffin's Company of the Virginia Heavy Artillery.
