About This Book

In this work, Kieffer explores the lives of eighteenth-century peasants in the flat country around Thionville. Village life is explored in terms of its economic, social, and cultural aspects. Demographic analysis reveals that the countryside at that time was highly populated, and economic and social approaches reveal that the peasantry at that time was highly divided and dominated by a powerful feudal system. The traditional values of Catholicism still predominated in the years leading up to the Revolution, and everyday life in these days appears to have been far more difficult for women than for men.
