About This Book

The four studies in this collection are the result of visits to African, European and American libraries and archives from 1958 to 1960. They do not revolve around any one theme, but rather seek to recount various aspects of the history of Africa that have not been told in detail before. Mirambo, one of the most important African leaders of Tanganyika in the nineteenth century, has never had a serious biography. The Holy Ghost Mission in Tanganyika and the American influence in Zanzibar from 1865 to 1915 suffer from a similar lack. Finally, the study on Mwinyi Mtwana is meant to draw attention to the myriad relationships between the Sultan of Zanzibar and those in Africa who considered themselves under his suzerainty - a subject still largely untouched by students of East African history.
