The title of this book suggests its two-fold purpose: to tell the story of South Carolina, but also to keep it within the context of the larger American story. Basically, it will show the Palmetto panorama, but the United States background will be sketched in briefly with each period of history prior to the examination of the Carolina scene. - Preface.
