About This Book

Synopsis: "This picture book portrays the bitter pre-liberation family history of Huang Lien-ying, a woman of poor-peasant origin wo is now a member of a people's commune in China's Szechuan Province. The despotic landlord Liu, the "King of Hell," seized vast tracts of fertile land and cruelly exploited the labouring people. Although he appeared to be a benevolent man, he had secretly built a water dungeon where many impoverished peasants were tortured and killed. This story of what Huang Lien-ying's family suffered is an exposure and denunciation of the crimes of the despotic landlords such as Liu the King of Hell."--Page [3].
