About This Book

This illustrated volume depicts Greek, Etruscan, and Roman objects purchased by the British Museum from the Castellani family. The items were selected by C.T. Newton, the Museum's Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities. Statuary depicted includes an archaic female kore, a marble statue of a woman or goddess, and bronze statue of a boy. Portraits include a bust of Julius Caesar, a marble head of the young Augustus, a colossal bronze head of Hera from Agrigento, and a bronze head of Aphrodite. Several photos illustrate an Etruscan sarcophagus with terracotta statues of a man and woman reclining on the lid, including four photos detailing the reliefs on the sides of the sarcophagus. Examples of vases include an askos in the shape of a lion, a sphinx rhyton by the Sotades painter, three red-ground vases from Southern Italy, a geometric oinochoe from Aegina, and a white-ground oinochoe from Locri. Other artifacts include four terracotta figures of actors, a bronze tablet with Oscan inscriptions, and a votive strigil with a female nude on the handle.
