Leon, or Arehleh, assimilated onetime Hasid and ex-professor, has lost his family; his rebbe gives him some young men to take into the woods. After escapes, mishaps and searching for meaning, he ends up in Italy trying to reach Palestine, having learned there is horror and extreme horror but occasionally sunshine within the horror. --
