The quest for public health in Manchester

Manchester was the original modern city. From the notorious districts of high mortality around 1840, through the scandals around 1900 over the poor physiques of would-be soldiers, it has been a classic case in the world-history of industrialisation and health. This book briefly reviews the story to World War Two, including new historical research; but then the focus is on the lesser-known history of the last sixty years.
