About This Book

Owing to the revolutionary changes in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, the fundamental threat perceptions of the East and the West have vanished at the turn of the decade. The military doctrines of the alliances are either under transformation (as in the case of NATO) or have ceased to exist, giving place to independent military doctrines of the individual East and Central European countries (as in the case of the Warsaw Pact). The contributors to this volume report this social process and try to identify some of the new threat perceptions which are inevitably going to arise under the new circumstances and which will shape their new military doctrines.
