Het Gouversneurshuis

The history of the renovated residence of the governor of West Flanders is sketched on the basis of photos, archives and art objects. The building, located in the center of Bruges on the Burg, was erected on the site of the residence of the Bruges bishops until the 18th century, next to the disappeared St. Donaas Cathedral. During Napoleonic France, the palace became the official residence of the prefect of the Leie department, who resided in Bruges. The building was renovated in a classical Empire style and richly furnished to receive the imperial couple Napoleon and Marie Louise in 1810. This book tells the story of the residents and visitors of the building (from Napoleon Bonaparte and Churchill to Prince William and Kate Middleton) and introduces you to this hidden gem in Bruges' city center by means of the most remarkable art objects.

Aan de hand van foto's, archieven en kunstvoorwerpen wordt de geschiedenis van de gerenoveerde residentie van de gouverneur van West-Vlaanderen geschetst. Het pand, gelegen in het centrum van Brugge op de Burg, werd opgericht op de plaats waar zich tot de 18de eeuw de residentie van de Brugse bisschoppen bevond, naast de verdwenen Sint-Donaaskathedraal. Tijdens het napoleontische Frankrijk werd het paleis de ambtwoning van de prefect van het Leiedepartement, die in Brugge zetelde. Het gebouw werd in classicistische empirestijl verbouwd en rijkelijk gestoffeerd om er in 1810 het keizerlijke echtpaar Napoleon en Marie Louise te ontvangen. Dit boek vertelt het verhaal van de bewoners en de bezoekers van het pand (van Napoleon Bonaparte en Churchill tot Prins William en Kate Middleton) en laat je aan de hand van de opmerkelijkste kunstobjecten kennismaken met deze verborgen parel in de Brugse binnenstad.
