Details Alexander Dallas Bache's involvement with the Arctic explorations, Charles Francis Hall's three voyages, the Polaris expedition, the A.W. Greely expedition, the Wilkes Expedition. A chapter, "Explorations in Northern Alaska," focuses on Smithsonian collectors in Alaska, including Robert Kennicott.
