About This Book

"Edward Applebaum's Montages was composed for the Montagnana Trio and was premiered by them in April of 1968. It represents a totally different view of these three instruments [clarinet, cello, and piano] than the Beethoven and Brahms Trios, since it is a work which has the exploration of sound as its primary compositional element. The three instruments are treated individually in short cadenzas, and in ensemble; during the ensembles (especially the beginning and end of the work) the explorations attempt to blur identities, leading to effects which the Times of London described as "electrifying." Additional explorations are carried out by varying vibratos, minute dynamic changes, and alternate fingerings of the same tone." From the notes to Everest LP 3262 which appears to contain the only recording of Montages by the Montagnana Trio in 1968.
