About This Book
Robert C. Lautman used a mid-nineteenth-century process to capture evocative images of Monticello and its grounds as Jefferson and his contemporaries might have known them. Working with an 8 x 10 camera and using only natural light, Lautman created views that were printed with the platinum-palladium process on hand-coated paper. The resulting images are complemented by an insightful selection of writings by Jefferson and others on the house, its appurtenances, and the patterns of daily life there.
The photographs and quotations magnificently re-create the unique atmosphere of Monticello.
