About This Book
Hesselholdt & Mejlvang goes into dialogue with Bertel Thorvaldsen and points to contemporary issues when they take over his famous museum in Copenhagen from February 9, 2019.0Busts covered by white sheets. Artists with full beard. Christ watching over breathing carpets. These are just some of the works you will be able to experience in Hesselholdt & Mejlvang?s exhibition THIS MOMENT is the BEGINNING at Thorvaldsens Museum. At the opening Sofie Hesselholdt and Vibeke Mejlvang will place a white flag on the roof of Thorvaldsens Museum. Freedom, equality and the multicultural are amongst the themes in this new total installation, which re-actualizes Thorvaldsen and his contemporary political opinions. This was a time when revolutionary ideas flourished, and the social classes were shaken.0By placing a white flag and a giant wreath on Victoria, the goddess of victory, on the rooftop of the museum, the artists make a reference to a bold action in 1841: At the museums original topping-out ceremony in December 1841, an artist named Bolette Puggaard had the French tricolore as well as a wreath placed on the museums new rooftop. This was done in the spirit of Thorvaldsen, to raise awareness for a rupture between the king and the arts. This wish was granted with the end of the absolute monarchy in Denmark eight years later.00Exhibition: Thorvaldsens Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark (09.02-01.09.2019).
