About This Book
This is the author's PhD dissertation ( for the Westfalischen Wilhelms Universitat in Munster), published in 1973 (written in 1970). It's 147 pp. long. There is a list of plates, but no actual illustrations—perhaps these were just included in the dissertation itself, which is a pity. The text is divided into two parts: I: Historical Background, Life, Artistic Development, Subject Matter, Composition and Movement, Technique and Colour, Sketches and Drawings, Sizes, Copies and Imitations, Written Sources; Part II: Flemish Heritage, Military Genre, The Landscape, The French Scene, Conclusion. There is then Biographical Data, Notes, and a Bibliography, followed by a Catalogue. With no reproductions, it's a little maddening. Still, it's the only thing out there on van der Meulen, as far as I know.
