Las sociedades mercantiles de Ponce, (1816-1830)

This volume traces the history of the merchants that established themselves in the Ponce region of Puerto Rico during the 19th century and united to form merchant societies. The members of these societies comprised a very significant social group that wielded great economic power after 1816, coinciding with the development of the sugar industry and decline in importation of African slaves.
