Analyzes creation of local, anti-crime vigilante movements known as "Autodefensas" that have emerged in recent decades to counter widespread narco-violence and police corruption. Based on case studies in states of Guerrero and Michoacan, authors shed light on specificities and heterogeneity of such groups, noting ways in which they subvert traditional concepts of power, state, capitalism and resistance.
