"'Onestade' designa nell’italiano antico un criterio etico ed estetico basato sul giusto equilibrio tra il bello e l’utile, una nozione risalente all’honestum di Cicerone che lo intendeva come insieme delle virtù cardinali e fine della vita morale. Questo libro indaga la scissione di quella diade tra Cinquecento e Seicento, a partire dall’affermarsi della priorità machiavelliana conferita a ciò che è pratico e materiale. L’'onestade' viene progressivamente a identificarsi con quelle buone maniere che celano di fatto l’utile personale, mentre si afferma una cultura della conversazione e del conformismo che porta con sé l’attenzione al controllo e alla lettura delle emozioni. La svolta finale avviene con il giusnaturalismo che pone le emozioni, come moventi delle azioni, al centro del discorso morale, spodestando le virtù. Alla fine del percorso stanno il concetto di onestà moderna, che si misura con il diritto, l’utilitarismo, che pone l’utile come fonte e fine del bene personale e civile, e il personaggio del 'romanzo moderno' che, a differenza dell’'eroe cavalleresco' predestinato dall’orizzonte dell’'onestade,' è condannato a scrivere la propria storia"--
"Onestade" designates in ancient Italian an ethical and aesthetic criterion based on the right balance between the beautiful and the useful, a notion dating back to Cicero's honestness that understood it as a set of cardinal virtues and the end of moral life. This book investigates the divide between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, beginning with the setting of the Machiavellian priority conferred on what is practical and material. The "honest" is progressively identified with those good manners that effectively conceal personal gain while affirming a culture of conversation and conformism that brings with it the attention to control and reading emotion. The final turning point is with the hypocrisy that puts emotions (as motives of action) at the center of moral discourse, thus dispelling virtues. At the end of the path is the concept of modern honesty, which is measured by law and utilitarianism, which places the benefit as the source and end of personal and civil good, and the character of the "modern novel" which, unlike the "chivalrous hero" predestined by the horizon of the "honest," is condemned to write his own story.
