John Wiles, a South African with a compassionate understanding equal to Alan Paton's and a remarkable literary gift, has written a first novel of the Bantu people that should be long remembered. Though its subject is the disintegration that comes upon an innocent black boy when he is plunged into the inhuman desolation and spiritual waste of the white man's world, it is not an angry book.
