About This Book

The town of Mollendo (by the Pacific Ocean in southern Peru) commemorated in 2021 one hundred and fifty years since its founding. It owes its development to the introduction of the Southern Railway in Perú and, at the same time, with its ebbs and flows, to the development of its port and the commerce of the city itself. Because of successive crises, many of the aged wooden structures are damaged, erasing some aspects of the city's spirit. In recent years some of its citizens have carried out a noticeable effort to recover and preserve the original characteristics of their properties. Roxana "Chichi" Doig's color photographs that comprise this work, offer an intimate look in her portrayal of her beloved city. In 2013 I started this photographic record touring its streets, recording the facades of the houses and their interiors that I browsed from their windows, collecting the beauty of years accumulated in their history, with the purpose of valuing the architecture, remembering history and bringing up typical daily scenes of Mollendo, knowing that with the future and modernity these spaces are exposed to disappear and this book is a rescue graphic to keep Mollendo's memory alive, pay tribute to it and make it perennial.ʺ (HKB Translation) Verso Cover.
