CIVIL ENGINEERING
The problem of abandoned mineral workings in the County of Cleveland is outlined briefly. The historical development of mineral extraction in the county over the last four centuries is traced. Mining plans and records have been studied and implications upon present-day development are outlined. To ensure that a record of the ironstone mines is not lost a composite plan for this mineral has been prepared, and included together with location plans for other minerals. Using these plans it is possible to determine the areas where special investigations procedures need to be adopted. Based on the results of a site investigation and a knowledge of the mining methods used, together with their effect upon the overlying strata, a foundation can be designed to overcome the problems associated with subsidence.
