Brita Bakema

Brita Bakema grew up in her youth amidst architects and visual artists. She herself took painting lessons from Karel Appel in Paris and Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg and developed a colorful abstract-figurative style full of symbolism. Brita was trained as a graphic designer at the London School of Printing & Graphic Arts. In recent years, Brita has started to combine her visual work with writing and this is reflected in her new book 'Brita Bakema: Impressions of a life journey'. She empathically sheds light on events from world history and her life. The book has become a reflection on a life journey involving painting and designing along the way. Her journey took her from the bombed-out Rotterdam in 1940, past London and Paris to Hamburg. In 1973 Brita returned to the Netherlands with her children. She then combined painting and design with her work as director of various art centers. In response to the book, an exhibition was organized in the Cobra Museum where her visual work as well as her stories and short poems were shown

Brita Bakema groeide in haar jeugd op te midden van architecten en beeldende kunstenaars. Zelf kreeg zij schilderles van Karel Appel in Parijs en Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg en ontwikkelde een kleurrijke abstract-figuratieve stijl vol symboliek. Haar opleiding tot grafisch ontwerper volgde Brita aan de London School of Printing & Graphic Arts. In de laatste jaren is Brita haar beeldende werk gaan combineren met schrijven en dat zien we terug in haar nieuwe boek 'Brita Bakema : Impressies van een levensreis'. Op empathische wijze belicht ze gebeurtenissen uit de wereldgeschiedenis en uit haar leven. Het boek is een reflectie op een levensreis geworden waarbij onderweg geschilderd en ontworpen werd. Haar reis voerde haar van het in 1940 gebombardeerde Rotterdam langs Londen en Parijs naar Hamburg. In 1973 keerde Brita met haar kinderen terug naar Nederland. Daarna combineerde ze schilderen en ontwerpen met haar werk als directeur van verschillende kunstcentra. Naar aanleiding van het boek werd in het Cobra Museum een tentoonstelling georganiseerd waar zowel haar beeldende werk als haar verhalen en korte gedichten te zien waren
