About This Book

The period of the Inquisition in Portugal (1536-1921) left marks and victims in São Paulo. Contrary to popular belief, there was an Inquisition in São Paulo, including the Holy Office. There were tensions (collection of taxes) exclusive to new Christians, waves of denunciation and hunting were registered to the Judaizers. Paulistas and their relatives, both in São Paulo and in other parts of Brazil or Portugal, were thrown into the basements of the Inquisition. Some of them had been executed or driven mad because they did not understand the 'crime' they had committed, others died of torture or disease acquired by the unhealthy prison conditions.
