About This Book
It's actually a paper, not a book. It was "read before the annual meeting of the Alcuin Club, May 1946 (Alcuin Club papers)" according to amazon.com, from whom it can be bought (used) for $210. The author, G. B. Timms, is responding to the conclusions and recommendations of Dom Gregory Dix in Dix's 1945 _The Shape of the Liturgy_, a very influential, long (close to 800 pages) criticism of the theological and liturgical changes brought about by the English Reformation and Thomas Cranmer. It is said to have been the "opening salvo" in an extensive re-working of the liturgies last edited in the 1928 Book of Common Prayer in the Episcopal Church of the USA. A new edition of the book was published in 2005. The resultant new liturgies are the basis of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Rite II, especially, departs theologically from the liturgies based on Cranmer's texts. I would love to get a copy of Timms' response to Dix, especially since the response was made so soon after Dix's book was published. But $210 is a lot more than I'd be willing to pay. Does anyone know what library might have a copy?
