Set against the sultry and alluring backdrop of a land rich in lore and enchantment, the story begins at the turn of the last century, when the tiny island of Puerto Rico - prized for its rich resources and mystical beauty - is torn apart by mighty colonial powers. In a society divided along racial lines, Puerto Rico's white Spanish population constantly seeks to oppress the island's many black inhabitants.

The ensuing narrative weaves legend, fable, and historical account in a chronicle of three families struggling to survive in a land at odds with its own cultural origins. As the drama unfolds across several towns, a powerful lawyer, a tortured doctor, a beautiful but dangerous woman, an ancient mystic, a murderous vixen, and a young man with strange and supernatural powers must all come to terms with their own cultural identity.
