The Temperance Movement and Its Workers

This is a mostly narrative account of the temperance movement, its ideas, organizations and campaigns, in the United Kingdom and the United States, but also with sections devoted to Canada, Australia and other countries. It was very well researched in its day, but it has many factual inaccuracies and therefore should be used as a guide to temperance history rather than as the 'Bible' of Temperance history. Its value probably lies in the detail it gives to various temperance organisations, such as the Good Templar, but also its biographical content which gives the reader an appreciation of the mindset of temperance advocates in the nineteenth century.
