About This Book

*Communism in the Philippines* was published serially in the *Manila Times* and *Taliba* from 23 January to 4 February 1969. This brief introduction to Philippine communism may be likened to the first step in a journey of a thousand miles.

Alfredo B. Saulo spent eight years (1950–1958) in the field with the communist-led Huk movement of Central and Southern Luzon. He found that communism in the Philippines, as in all developing countries freed from the yoke of colonialism, is still in the nationalist phase of development. Viewed in light of the World War II record of Filipino communists' cooperation with other social groups and classes, Philippine communism ceases to pose a serious threat to national security and instead becomes a challenge to the patriotism, integrity, and high resolve of Filipino leaders and the people in general.
