Exploration of Alaska: 1865-1900

American exploration of the far northwest began in 1865 with the famed Telegraph Expedition and continued with teh Coast Survey and active explorations by the United States Army. The Department of the Columbia sponsored a series of geographical explorations that culminated in a journey of discovery by Henry Allen in 1885. Inland exploration, geodetic surveys, and natural history forays are described in detail.
