About This Book
Biography of John Frederick Mortlock (1809-1882), who believed, mistakenly, that he would inherit a profitable banking business. He assaulted one of his uncles (who shared in the inheritance), and was transported to Australia to serve 21 years. He was paroled (on condition he not return to England), and promptly returned to bring suit against his uncles. He was sentenced to a year in jail in Cambridge, and then again transported to serve out his full term in Australia. After his final release, he spent the remainder of his life in England in futile attempts to acquire the property, still convinced he had been defrauded.
