About This Book

Hipponax is a "difficult" author mainly because it is complicated to make clear the boundaries of his poetic activity, which ranges from personal attack to epic parody and the burlesque rewriting of Homeric events. This study focuses on Hipponax's language, combining traditional linguistic analysis with literary interpretation, in an attempt to identify the function of this language and the reason for its use in the poetry of Hipponax. This work intends to present a literary study of Hipponax's language as well as a linguistic one, and this is articulated in a series of selective studies focusing mainly on the relationship between language and literature. These studies cover the topics of kennings and onomastics, Homerisms and aulicisms, and the peculiarities of the Ionic dialect.
