The author describes his boyhood in Missouri and his overland trip to California in the spring of 1847. On the way, his party met General Kearny, returning from California. Kearny told them it was too late to cross the mountains to California, so they took the Oregon Road down the Snake River. Braly stayed for a while with Dr. Whitman, but due to a premonition of his mother's he left the mission just two weeks before the massacre. By the spring of 1849, he was in California, where he settled.
