In October 1944 Hitler ordered that the northern part of Norway be burnt and emptied of everything that could be of assistance to Russian troops or the Norwegian government-in-exile in London. Residents were forced into boats and trains, and hundreds of people died on the journey. This book provides a thorough overview of the forced evacuation of Finnmark, including personal narratives of the evacuees. It also gives voice to the many who participated in the reception work in the south.
