Analyzes burial law in medieval canon law and compares it with the prescriptions for burial in church legislation of the same period in Norway, Iceland and Sweden. Considers the relationship of the grave to the cemetery or church yard, as well as to the individual. Shows how theological reflection, the conditions in economic matters and parochial structures, the status of the bishop and his liturgical functions as well as church discipline and penal law have been decisive factors for the development of burial laws.
