About This Book
The Rhine Bridge is an icon of the failed Battle of Arnhem. Locally, the bridge was of great importance. From 1603 a ship bridge connected the banks of the Rhine. Around 1900 Arnhem needed a permanent cross-river connection. Architects came with spectacular designs. In the city council, discussions were held where that bridge should come. A new residential area could be built on the south bank. The bridge was completed in 1935, but there was no question of a festive opening because of fierce discussions about tolling. In the morning of May 10, 1940, Dutch soldiers blew up the bridge.
