About This Book

In 1979 William Cardinal Baum and the Archdiocese of Washington sponsored a workshop on Principles of Catholic Moral Life at The Catholic University of America. The present volume contains the papers given at that workshop. The principal purpose of the workshop and of this volume is to present a substantive and comprehensive introduction to the basic principles upon which the Christian way of life, as understood by the Roman Catholic Church, is based. A secondary but nonetheless significant purpose of both the workshop and of this volume is to offer considered and intelligent criticism of some recent developments in Catholic moral thought, in particular the development of a consequentialist methodology in the determination of the morality of human acts.
