When he was just 22 his newspaper JORNAL DA INDIA was suspended by governor fracisco Manuel Couceriro da Costa for it disturbed public order and peace. He complied with suspension order, but published a pamphlet, Corta Politica that contained a scathing attack on the policies of the government.
