Lucy lied

In the Monterey, California of the late 1870s, religious tent camp meetings are held cheek by jowl with lynchings. At this intersection of the righteous and the profane, a double triangle evolves linking Doctor Jason Garrett, a would-be healer accustomed to putting the truth through a contortion or two; Sally Locke, the madame with her sights set on Doc Garrett; Lucy Strang, a mute woman on trial for the murder of her common-law husband; and gunman Matt Clancy, an eviction agent who forces settlers off railroad land yet stalwartly defends Chinese immigrants. Lucy is saved from the noose when Garrett falsifies medical testimony. He plans to marry the maligned redhead and find a cure for her condition, but is gratitude enough for a second chance?
