Violence without Borders

Violence without Borders uncovers the process by which patriarchy, discriminatory legal systems, institutions, and hegemonic values make violence against women endemic, beginning at the level of the family and local community. Following a theoretical discussion on violence against women and human rights and an overview of the international human rights framework, Ertürk presents ten country case studies drawing on her experience working with United Nations institutions and mechanisms to expose the underlying reasons for women's disempowerment - and ultimately their empowerment in joining forces to change patriarchal hierarchies in their respective societies and the world at large.
