About This Book
Exhibition under the general curatorship of Mauricio Nieto aimed at examining how the Europeans represented and scientifically studied the natural resources and the native population of the Americas. The exhibition includes documents, books and historic images, along a series of botanical images done by Abel Rodríguez, a Nonuya Indian author of the graphic description with annotations of hundreds of plants and trees from the Amazonian region accompanied by a selection of contemporary artwork, mostly from the holdings of the Collection of Art of the Banco de la República. The exhibition celebrates the bicentennial of the death of Jose Celestino Mutis (b. Spain 1732-1808) and in commemoration of the Royal Botanical Expedition he lead in Colombia in 1783.
