Locke and the idea that these books suohld be entertaining. Do you have a reference for that? I'd be interested. It strikes me that from what you've shown us from this book, that it is more than just illustration. They seem to be implying song and games, entertaining stories, as well as a sort of sleight of hand: A new way of teaching children the Alphabet, by way of diversion. Education is to be slipped in while the child is distracted. I would suspect that the ball and pin cushion were thus more than just marketing, or rather the marketing ran deep as a mode of pedagogy. The use of which will infallibly make Tommy a good Boy, and Polly and good Girl. Infallibly! Those must have been some toys Pedagogy is useful as a marketing plug, no surprise there, we still use it to sell dreams.
