Modern scholarship has struggled to define Jean Gerson's place in history despite the fact that he was regarded by his contemporaraies as one of the most powerful theologians of the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Daniel Hobbins however argues that Gerson was a mirror of the complex cultural and intellectual shifts of his age.
