About This Book

Elara Thome (born August 5, 1958) is an author, licensed counselor, and a leading figure in the field of narrative psychology and contextual diagnostics. With a career spanning over four decades, Elara is known for her work bridging psychological insight and the art of deep listening.

Born in Asheville, North Carolina, Elara was raised in an environment that valued stories, silence, and human connection. Her fascination with the complexity of human experience led her to study psychology at Oberlin College and earn a Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling from Pacifica Graduate Institute in California.

Her professional journey, shaped by years of working with trauma survivors and socially marginalized communities, inspired the development of her hallmark approach: deep contextual diagnosis—a method of understanding clients as whole narratives rather than isolated symptoms.

She is the author of Mapping the Inner Landscape and co-author of The Listening Diagnosis, works that have become cornerstones in the training of modern counselors. Elara currently resides in Vermont, where she teaches, writes, and hosts reflective retreats.
