About This Book

Born in Person County, North Carolina, James Curry begins his narrative by describing his mother's life in slavery when he was a child. He then goes on to write about his own life as a slave, the treatment of slaves generally, and his growing desire for freedom. He concludes his one-page narrative with the tale of his escape to Massachusetts and his plans to go on to Canada as soon as he can to escape slavery altogether.
