About This Book

Abstract: A textbook presents an integration of the theoretical basis for nutritional care with other relevant biologic sciences to provide the dietetics student with the background for increasing independence in planning nutritional care. The material is intended for students who already have completed rigorous courses in biochemistry and normal physiology. Following a discussion of the general principles of pathology, nutritional care, and the interactions of drugs and nutrition, a systematic approach is used in addressing pathologic conditions and relevant nutritional care. Two special sections cover disorders which result in enhanced nutrient needs and the nutrition-related problem areas of energy balance and body weight disorders, and handicapping conditions. Abundant tables and schematics are given throughout the text, and numerous appendices provide definitions, weight-height recommendations, therapeutic diet information, and other information. (wz).
