Whither GIS? This book - the first in a planned seriespresents GIS research at the cutting edge, and derives from presentations made at the inaugural GIS Research UK Conference (GISRUK) transdisciplinary focus meeting sponsored by the Association for Geographic Information/AGI and the UK Regional Research Laboratories Initiative, and comprising leading experts from UK, Europe, and elsewhere. The contributions to this bookall of which have been fully revised and enhanced for publication - focus on the new ways in which geographical information systems can be used to further the effective handling of spatially-referenced data. The book is organized into three parts, reflecting the division of research activity in the field: computational support, which addresses new technological developments and the scientific models they support; spatial analysis and error, and applications, from local government to macro environmental problem-solving support.
