About This Book

This first complete bibliography of submarine accidents resulting in one or more deaths is a spinoff from a larger study of public reactions to disasters. Results of enemy action or wartime conditions are excluded, but accidents occurring during wartime are listed. The arrangement is chronological. Each of 108 listings gives the date; name of the submarine, number, and country; a brief description of the accident and casualties; and a list of references. Where discrepancies exist, these are noted. Most items refer to large-scale collisions, fires, or foundering, with scores of casualties, but the listing includes an officer swept from the bridge, a seaman asphyxiated, and seven lost during a sea rescue. Fatalities due to fire decreased after the diesel engine came into use, but increased again after World War II. Collisions declined with improvements in navigational equipment.
