The endless search for the HMS Hussar

In 1780 the British frigate H.M.S. Hussar, reputed to be carrying the British Army's payroll, hit Pot Rock while attempting to sail through Hell Gate to a new anchorage at Gardiners Bay on eastern Long Island. Robert Apuzzo has gathered accounts and documents relating to the many unsuccessful attempts to find and salvage the wreck.
